About this worksheet

Each worksheet has 6 problems reading a bar model to find a missing multi-digit number.

This worksheet uses a bar model to pose a multi-digit problem - a whole split into two named parts, or a whole split into equal groups - with one quantity marked by a question mark. All four operations come out of the same picture, which is what makes the model worth having: a part-whole bar is subtraction when a part is missing and addition when the whole is. The bars are deliberately not drawn to scale and say so, because at four digits a student who measured rather than calculated would often be right. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.

Student objectives

  • Read a part-part-whole bar model.
  • Read an equal groups bar model.
  • Choose the operation the model calls for.

Everyday practice

  • Draw a bar to show two amounts and their total.
  • Split a bar into equal groups and label one.
  • Say which operation a picture is showing.
