About this worksheet
Each worksheet has 12 problems matching a function machine rule to the input/output table it produces.
This worksheet lists twelve function machine rules and a bank of twelve input/output tables, and asks children to match each rule to its table. Because every table in the bank is the answer to some other rule, guessing from a single row does not work - one row like 2 going to 4 fits both times two and plus two, so a rule has to be tested against all four rows. Every table is checked to fit exactly one of the twelve rules, so each is used once and the page always resolves. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.
Student objectives
- Match a single operation rule to the input/output table it produces.
- Test a rule against every row of a table, not just the first.
- Recognize that one row alone can fit more than one rule.
Everyday practice
- Give someone a rule and have them fill in an in/out table for it.
- Look at a table and work out the rule, then check it on every row.
- Make two tables from different rules and see which numbers give them away.
