About this worksheet
Each worksheet has 12 problems using estimation to decide whether a given integer answer is reasonable.
This worksheet is the reason estimation is taught: a completed problem is shown and the student decides whether the answer could be right. Every unreasonable answer is on the wrong side of zero or has the signs ignored, so an estimate genuinely settles it - an answer that was merely a little off would not be catchable by estimating, and marking it wrong would teach that estimating means checking exactly. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.
Student objectives
- Estimate an integer sum or difference.
- Compare a given answer against that estimate.
- Decide whether the answer could be correct.
Everyday practice
- Check a calculator answer against an estimate.
- Say why an answer on the wrong side of zero must be wrong.
- Estimate first, then work it out.
