Continuing Visual Dot Patterns Worksheet Download

This worksheet draws the first three steps of a dot pattern and asks how many dots the fourth step would need. No numbers are given anywhere, so the rule has to be read off the pictures themselves. The shapes vary between single rows, blocks of rows, squares, staircases and pyramids, and some patterns shrink instead of growing, so students cannot rely on one rule fitting every question.

About this worksheet

Students look at the first three steps of a dot pattern, work out how it grows or shrinks, and write how many dots the next step would have.

Student objectives

  • Spot the rule that makes each dot pattern grow or change
  • Predict what the next picture in a pattern should look like
  • Count dots carefully to check that a pattern is correct
  • Explain how a pattern changes from one step to the next

Everyday practice

  • Notice how tiles or dots increase in a border design and guess the next row
  • Predict the next arrangement when setting out an increasing number of objects
  • Figure out how many stickers come next when they grow by the same amount each time
