Where Does the First Digit Go? Worksheet Download
This math worksheet practices one step of long division: deciding where to start. If the divisor does not go into the first digit of the dividend, students start with the first two digits, and that decides where the first answer digit goes and how many digits the answer has. For 4 ) 312, 4 does not go into 3, so students divide 4 into 31 first and the answer has two digits. Half the problems start with one digit and half with two, and every page includes a first digit equal to the divisor. The answer key shows each answer written over the digits it belongs above.
