About this worksheet

Each worksheet has 6 volumes where students select every rectangular prism that has it, drawn as labelled boxes.

This worksheet gives a volume and four rectangular prisms, and asks which of them have it - two or three do. The second sentence of the standard says that prisms of different dimensions can have the same volume, and that is the only sentence a select-all question can express: the existing sheets compare boxes and ask which is greatest, where a tie would be a nuisance rather than the point. The correct answers are always different sets of dimensions rather than the same box turned around, since two by three by four and four by three by two are one prism seen twice. The wrong volumes sit within a quarter of the target, so a student cannot rule anything out by looking and has to multiply. Every box on a problem is drawn to one scale, so a box that looks bigger really is.

Student objectives

  • Find the volume of a rectangular prism.
  • Recognize that different prisms can share a volume.
  • Select every shape with a given volume.

Everyday practice

  • Compare boxes that hold the same amount.
  • Work out which package fits the same contents.
  • Check whether two containers hold equally much.
