4.5 Million Math Problems Solved in the Math Games

Kids have solved more than 4.5 million math problems in Math Jigsaw Puzzles and Math Bubble Pop. What they play, what they love and what trips them up.

Hey everyone,

Back in August I added two math games to the site, Math Jigsaw Puzzles and Math Bubble Pop. I've been counting ever since, and kids have now solved more than 4.5 million math problems in them. That's not puzzles finished or games started. Every one of those is a single problem someone got right.

Math Jigsaw Puzzles - 1.8 Million Problems

Every piece has a problem on it, and it only snaps into the picture when you drop it on its answer. Kids have placed more than 1.8 million of those pieces and finished more than 68,000 math puzzles.

Math Bubble Pop - Nearly 2.7 Million Problems

Each level shows one problem at a time, and you clear it by popping the bubbles with the answer. Since I started tracking it on August 18, kids have popped nearly 2.7 million right answers and cleared more than 158,000 levels.

And It's Speeding Up
chart of math problems solved per day, August to October
September alone was more than 2.5 million problems, and October is running at over 110,000 a day. At this rate it'll pass 5 million sometime this week.
For a worksheet site, here's another way to look at it: 4.5 million problems is about 225,000 worksheets of 20 problems each.

Multiplication Wins
Two out of every three jigsaw problems were multiplication, more than 1.2 million times table facts. Almost 6 in 10 Bubble Pop games were multiplication too.

Kids Keep Going
Finishing a math puzzle usually isn't the end. 61% of kids who finish one go on to start another, and almost half do more than one.
In Bubble Pop a third of games make it to level 10, 57 kids have climbed past level 60, and one has made it all the way to level 200. They scored so many points they maxed out the tracker I use to record scores, which tops out at 99,999,999. :D
More than a quarter of Bubble Pop players come back on another day, and about 1 in 7 are still playing a week or more after their first game. One device has racked up 17,833 correct answers all by itself.

Puzzles As a Team
You can invite others to work on the same puzzle at the same time, and classes have been doing exactly that. More than 3,700 puzzles were finished as a team, 115 of them by groups of 11 or more. The biggest team was 45 kids on a 400 piece math puzzle.
The biggest puzzle ever finished had 2,035 pieces, which means 2,035 math problems. A team of 16 put it together back in September.

What They Like
the two most popular jigsaw pictures, Otter Bliss and Jack-o'-Lantern Wall
The favorite picture is Otter Bliss. 260 different kids have finished it, and it has 123 thumbs up to just 3 thumbs down. The Halloween pictures only went up at the start of October and over 6,000 kids have already played one. The Jack-o'-Lantern Wall is already the 3rd most played picture of all time.
The most popular art style is the pastel anime one, with 95% thumbs up. The 1950s style retro future ads? The kids are less sold on those, 79%.

What Trips Them Up
chart of which bubble pop levels are hardest to clear
In Bubble Pop the toughest levels are the ones with a limited number of balls. About 1 in 4 of those end without a win. The plain "get them right" levels are the easiest, and 89% of them get cleared.
The hardest theme is underwater. Only 58% of those levels get cleared, compared to 89% for the kittens and the beach.

It's Happening in Classrooms
Close to 4 out of 5 games are played on weekdays during school hours, and only 2% on weekends. Thursday is the busiest day for the puzzles.

Thanks to everyone using these with their classes. If you haven't tried them yet, here's Math Jigsaw Puzzles and Math Bubble Pop.
As always, if you spot something weird, let me know.
