About this worksheet

Each worksheet has 16 problems using estimation to decide whether a decimal product is reasonable.

Every unreasonable answer on this worksheet has its decimal point one place out, which is the whole argument for estimating a decimal product: a student who gets 1,022.4 instead of 102.24 has multiplied correctly and placed the point wrongly, and no amount of re-checking the digits will find it while an estimate finds it at once. An answer that was merely a little off would not be catchable by estimating, and marking it unreasonable would teach that estimating means checking exactly. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.

Student objectives

  • Estimate a decimal product.
  • Compare a given answer against that estimate.
  • Spot an answer whose decimal point is misplaced.

Everyday practice

  • Estimate before multiplying decimals.
  • Check where the decimal point belongs.
  • Say why an answer ten times too big must be wrong.
