Each worksheet has 4 problems finding the area of an L-shaped figure from its side lengths.
The rectilinear area worksheet on this site is grade 3 and counts squares on a grid. Nothing gives a six-sided figure with its side lengths written on it and asks for the area, which is the grade 6 form of the same idea - there is nothing to count, so the figure has to be cut into pieces and the pieces added. One length a student needs is deliberately not labelled: the height of the smaller rectangle is the long side minus the notch, and working it out is the real difficulty of a composite area question. Every wrong answer is a named error - the whole enclosing rectangle with the notch forgotten, one piece counted alone, and the perimeter. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.
