About this worksheet

Each worksheet has 24 problems evaluating a power with a whole-number base and exponent.

This worksheet evaluates general powers rather than only squares and cubes, which is what the standard asks for and what the other exponent sheets on this site stop short of. An exponent of 1 appears deliberately - it is the case students get wrong most often after the zero power, because nothing appears to happen. Base and exponent pairs are filtered on the RESULT so every answer stays within four digits. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.

Student objectives

  • Evaluate a power with a whole-number base and exponent.
  • Recognize that an exponent of 1 leaves the base unchanged.
  • Work beyond squares and cubes.

Everyday practice

  • Say what an exponent tells you to do.
  • Work out 2 to the 5th without a calculator.
  • Explain why 7 to the 1st is 7.

Standards

6ee1
