About this worksheet
Each worksheet has 20 problems using estimation to judge whether a division answer is reasonable.
This worksheet gives a division problem with an answer already filled in and asks whether that answer is reasonable, which is the second half of the standard - assessing the reasonableness of results rather than producing an estimate. The unreasonable answers are off by a factor of ten, because that is the error long division actually produces and it is exactly the error an estimate catches. An answer only slightly wrong would need the full calculation to detect, which is the opposite of estimating. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.
Student objectives
- Judge whether a division answer is reasonable.
- Use an estimate to catch a place value error.
- Recognize an answer that is ten times too big or too small.
Everyday practice
- Estimate before dividing, then check the answer against it.
- Ask whether an answer has the right number of digits.
- Spot an answer that is ten times off.
