About this worksheet
Each worksheet has 16 problems deciding which of two lengths in inches, feet and yards is longer or shorter.
This worksheet asks which of two lengths is longer or shorter when the two are written in different units. The larger number is the longer length only half the time, which is the point - a question like 2 yards against 5 feet cannot be answered by comparing the numbers, while 1 yard against 5 feet can, and a sheet made of the second kind quietly rewards ignoring the units. Half the questions ask for longer and half for shorter, so the question has to be read as well. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.
Student objectives
- Decide which of two lengths is longer or shorter when the units differ.
- Convert to a common unit before comparing.
- Recognize that the larger number is not always the longer length.
Everyday practice
- Compare two lengths written in different units before measuring anything.
- Say which is longer without working it out exactly, then check.
- Find two objects whose lengths are given in different units and order them.
