This worksheet adds two mixed numbers using a bar model, with each addend drawn in its own denominator and a bottom bar cut into the common denominator. Drawing both addends in twelfths from the start would do the renaming for the student and leave nothing but counting, so the model shows the step it is teaching rather than the step after it. The fraction parts often add to more than a whole on purpose - one and three fourths plus one and one half is three and a quarter, not two and five quarters, and two part-filled bars side by side are the clearest picture of why regrouping happens. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.
