About this worksheet
Each worksheet has 6 problems finding the perimeter of a real rectangular object.
This worksheet asks children to find the perimeter of ordinary rectangular things - a towel, a doormat, a whiteboard, a poster, a phone - each shown as a picture with its width and height marked on dimension lines, in the same layout used by state test items. Because the drawing is made to match the numbers, students can see that the two unlabeled sides are the same as the two labeled ones, which is the step most often missed. Over a hundred different objects are in the bank and the measurements are chosen at random within realistic ranges, so no two worksheets repeat. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.
Student objectives
- Find the perimeter of a real rectangular object from its labeled width and height.
- Read a measurement from a dimension line on a diagram.
- Use the fact that opposite sides of a rectangle are equal to account for the two sides that are not labeled.
- Attach the correct unit to a perimeter and recognize that it is a length, not an area.
Everyday practice
- Measure a doormat or bath mat at home and work out how much edging it would need.
- Figure out how much ribbon would go around the edge of a poster or picture frame.
- Measure a tabletop and decide how long a strip of tape would have to be to go all the way around.
- Check the width and height printed on a television or screen box and add up the distance around it.
