About this worksheet
Each worksheet has 6 problems choosing which of four figures is congruent to a given figure.
The three wrong answers are the three ways a figure can fail to be congruent, and each is the same figure transformed, so none can be ruled out by shape at a glance: one scaled evenly, which is similar and is the answer most students give; one squashed in a single direction, which is not even similar though the outline still reads as familiar; and one that is a different figure altogether. Two unrelated shapes would be answered without thinking about size at all. The correct figure is always turned or flipped rather than sitting the same way up, since a congruent figure in the same orientation is spotted by matching outlines and that is not what this standard is about. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.
Student objectives
- Choose the figure congruent to a given one.

- Recognize a figure that has been stretched in one direction only.
Everyday practice
- Say whether two shapes would stack exactly on top of each other.
- Explain why a photocopy at half size is not congruent.
- Describe a shape that has been squashed.
